NICHOLAS SAUNDERS

Escuela de Doblaje de Canciones (Spain)

NICHOLAS SAUNDERS has a degree in Hispanic Philology and is co-author, alongside Iñaki Torre, of the Manual de traducción y adaptación de canciones para doblaje y teatro musical (Translation and Adaptation Manual for Song Dubbing and Musical Theatre), the first work in Spanish entirely dedicated to this subject. He combines his work as coordinator of Escuela de Doblaje de Canciones and Escuela de Traducción Audiovisual with the teaching of Spanish Language and Literature and of English in Secondary. He organises courses in translation, adaptation and song dubbing, and has given courses and lectures on musical adaptation at the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Murcia and the Jean Jaurès University of Toulouse.

He trained in musical theatre at the Escuela Memory of Madrid, directed by Ricard Reguant and Àngels Gonyalons, and as an accompanying pianist with Gustavo Piqué. He has performed as a voice actor in the films Flags of Our FathersHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Funny Games, and in series such as Without a TraceDexter or South Park. For several years, he directed Broadway Revisited, a musical ensemble specialised in musical theatre concerts, and is currently the pianist and musical director of Tapestry, a tribute to Carole King which performs in various venues in Madrids de Madrid.

IÑAKI TORRE

Escuela de Doblaje de Canciones (Spain)

IÑAKI TORRE holds a degree in Hispanic Philology and is co-author, alongside Nicholas Saunders, of the Manual de traducción y adaptación de canciones para doblaje y teatro musical (Translation and Adaptation Manual for Song Dubbing and Musical Theater), the first work in Spanish entirely devoted to this subject. Currently, he participates as a teacher of musical translation and adaptation for the Escuela de Doblaje de Canciones, and has also taught courses on this subject at the University Jean Jaurès of Toulouse. He combines his job as a teacher with the adaptation of lyrics into Spanish for various theater groups. He has adapted The Last Five Years and Godspell into Spanish, as well as numerous songs by authors such as Jason Robert Brown (Songs for a New World) and Jonathan Larson (Rent) for the musical ensemble Broadway Revisited.

MARÍA DEL MAR OGEA POZO

Universidad de Córdoba (Spain)

MARÍA DEL MAR OGEA POZO has a degree in Modern Languages and Translation and Interpreting (Italian-Spanish-English) from the University of Salford (Manchester) and a PhD in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Córdoba. For many years, she has worked as a freelance translator specialized in medical and audiovisual translation. She is currently a lecturer and researcher at the University of Córdoba, where she focuses her research on audiovisual translation. She is a member of the HUM-1145 and TRADIT research groups. She coordinates TradAV (www.uco.es/tradav/), a website providing resources for learning audiovisual translation.

ALBERTO MIRA

Oxford Brookes University (UK)

ALBERTO MIRA is a professor of Film Studies at Oxford Brookes University, where he teaches classes on Film Styles and Film Stardom. He has translated several essays into Spanish and edited Oscar Wilde's letters for Alba Editorial. He has also published editions of The Importance of Being Earnest and Lady Windermere's Fan by Oscar Wilde, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee for Cátedra. Among his numerous publications are the essays De Sodoma a Chueca and Miradas insumisas, as well as a large number of articles in academic and popular magazines about Pedro Almodóvar, Eloy de la Iglesia, Eduardo Mendicutti, Jane Fonda, Mario Casas, and others. He is the author of the Historical Dictionary of Spanish Cinema published by Scarecrow Press. His publications include The Pop Musical: Sweat, Tears and Tarnished Utopias and Entre la cámara y la carne. El cine homoerótico en 25 películas. His latest publication is El teatro musical de Stephen Sondheim, and he is currently preparing a complete Spanish edition of the lyrics of Cole Porter.

DANIEL RICARDO SOTO BUENO

University of Málaga (Spain)

DANIEL SOTO holds a PhD in Translation and Interpreting from the Universidad de Málaga and the Université de Montréal, with his thesis titled Reception and Songs in the Translation of Musicals in Spain (2001-2021): A Descriptive and Functional Approach, which he defended in 2022.

In his thesis, he applies a descriptive-queer and functional-multimodal analysis model which updates the panorama of the reception of musicals in Spain and which also reinforces the hypothesis that musical translation is in most cases a form of translation-recreation.

He works as a translator-transcreator of web and audiovisual content, editing, marketing, board games and, mainly, video games, since 2014.


He has dedicated a part of his publications in journals or collective works to applied translation studies in song translation, the didactics of singable translation, and, mostly, the descriptive-functional analysis of the translation of musicals.

PAULA CIFUENTES FÉREZ

University of Murcia (Spain)

PAULA CIFUENTES FÉREZ PhD in Philosophy and Arts with a European Doctorate mention from the University of Murcia in 2008. Affiliated with the Department of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Murcia since 2011, currently holding the position of Full/Associate Professor. Holds two six-year research periods and three five-year teaching periods. She is a member of the research group "Translation, Didactics, and Cognition" the educational innovation group "TRADICO INNOVA”, and the TREC network. Her research interests focus on cognitive linguistics applied to translation and the cognitive processes involved in translation, including affective and personality factors.

Over the past years, she has published numerous papers in internationally renowned journals such as PlosOne, Onomazein, Target, Vial, and Review of Cognitive Linguistics. She has published 28 papers. 11 of her publications are indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), and 19 in Web of Science Core Collection (with 159 citations and an h-index of 10). In Google Scholar, she has 949 citations and an h-index of 17. Additionally, she is a member of the editorial board of the Journal Review of Cognitive Linguistics (in JCR) by the prestigious John Benjamins publishing house and the new open-access journal Metodología en Traducción e Interpretación (MeTI), sponsored by the Iberian Association of Translation and Interpretation Studies (AEITI). Furthermore, she reviews articles for journals such as Language and Cognition, International Journal of Bilingualism, The Interpreter and Translator Trainer, Trans, Íkala, Tradumática, among others.

She has conducted pre- and post-doctoral research stays at the Max Planck for Psycholinguistics (Netherlands), Northwestern University (Illinois, USA), Institute of Cognitive Science (Louisiana USA), the University of East Anglia (Norwich, UK), and Adam Mickiewicz University (Poznań, Poland). As a full-time researcher in the last 10 years, she has participated in six research projects, including the still ongoing project "Emotions and Translation" (EMOTRA 2, ref. PID2021-123650NB-100), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and led by Ana Rojo López.

 

She has presented papers at over fifty national and international conferences and universities related to Translation and Interpretation, Cognitive Linguistics, and teaching innovation. She has been part of organizing committees for national and international conferences, including AELCO (2006), Ojo del Polisemo (2018); XVI Translation, Text and Interferences (2019); TPRW (2019); X AIETI (2022); II Lyrics and Crafts (2025). In terms of innovation and outreach, she has participated in 10 innovation projects, directing 8 of them; she organized the I EMOTRA Dissemination Seminar (Murcia, June 29, 2021), where she delivered a public lecture, and the Thinking-for-Speaking and Audio Description Outreach Event (Valencia, October 18, 2024). Moreover, she published two popular science articles in the Spanish Translators’ Bulletin Puntoycoma (2024, 2025), and has participated in recent editions of the Murcia Region Science Week (SeCyT) and European Researchers’ Night.

RAÚL GALOPPE

Montclair State University (USA)

RAÚL GALOPPE is a Professor in the Department of Spanish and Latino Studies at Montclair State University in the U.S. His research interests include theater of the Spanish Golden Age and the translation of musicals for Spanish-speaking audiences. He teaches courses on theater, film, and audiovisual translation. As author or editor, he published Género y confusión en el teatro de Tirso de Molina (Pliegos, 2000), Explorations in Subjectivity, Borders, and Demarcation: A Fine Line, with Richard Weiner (UP of America, 2005), A Stubborn Ghost: Essays in Honor of Henry W. Sullivan (Peter Lang, 2023), and many academic articles.  As a playwright, he wrote and directed three musical plays: Decadencia divina (1983), Con el pie derecho (1986), Este soy yo (2023), in addition to several revues: Los más dulces sonidosGustavo con V corta and C’est Magnifique, which were presented in Argentina in 2024. He also translated Mark St. Germain's masterpiece, Becoming Dr. Ruth. He is currently working on a new theatrical production and a project involving audio description.

JERUSA ARIAS

Escuela de Arte Dramático de Murcia (Spain)

JERUSA ARIAS holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Dramatic Arts, specializing in Musical Theatre Performance, a qualification in Spanish Dance, a Master’s Degree in Theatre Literature, and a Bachelor’s Degree in English Philology. With over 15 years of experience, she has developed her teaching career at the ESAD of Cáceres, the Professional Conservatory of Music of Cartagena, the Professional Conservatory of Dance of Murcia, and currently as a specialist professor in Musical Theatre Performance at the ESAD of Murcia.

She has been a lead actress for the companies Teatro Clásico ESAD (No hay burlas con el amor, El desdén con el desdén, touring Spain, the USA, and Mexico), Caja de Música, Compañía Lírica Española (with the zarzuelas Luisa Fernanda and El dúo de La africana) and the musicals Victor/Victoria, Into the Woods, Momo, and Imagina; she has also been a dancer and assistant director at the Compañía Murciana de Danza and the flamenco group Con Aire. She has directed the productions Cervantes' Entremeses and The Importance of Being Earnest. Currently, she is a choreographer and assistant director at Cía. Taules Teatre, participating in musicals such as Newsies, Snow White, or & Juliet. Likewise, she has collaborated with several choirs such as the Hims Mola polyphonic choir or Ditirambo, in addition to writing for the magazines Ciclorama (ESAD Córdoba), Tiempo de Danza, or Ñaque.
